Beyond the Classroom, by Laurence Steinberg
With an emphasis on student engagement in learning, the study looks at factors such as parenting strategies,
the influence of peers and extracurricular activities. Steinberg looks primarily at issues beyond the school
walls as the data shows these influences (large scale) are greater indicators of student success or
failure than teacher's classroom practice or organization of the school system.

Different Learners: Identifying, Preventing, and Treating Your

Child's Learning Problems by Jane M. Healy, From educational psychologist Healey (Your Child's Growing Mind)

comes a parents' guide to learning disorders and the positive steps to avoid or reverse problems

accompanying a child's diagnosis. Defining a learning problem as “any innate or acquired characteristic that

consistently interferes with one or more aspects of learning,” Healey explains that the way a brain is “wired”

accounts for disorders in language arts and math, social and personal organizational skills, and motor

and sensory abilities. Whether a development problem becomes a disability (and if medication is appropriate)

depends on its severity and expectations made of a child at a given age. Healey provides a very hands-on guide

with anecdotal case studies, the latest brain science research data made comprehensible, and plenty of bulleted

checklists covering symptoms, action steps, and advice.

In Defense of Food: An Eater's Manifesto
In Defense of Food : An Eater's Manifesto, by Michael Pollan
shows us how, despite the daunting dietary landscape Americans confront in the modern supermarket,
we can escape the Western diet and, by doing so, most of the chronic diseases that diet causes.
Pollan's last book, The Omnivore's Dilemma, launched a national conversation about the American way of
eating; now In Defense of Food shows us how to change it, one meal at a time. How much do we really
know about the food we buy? Check out the Hungry for Change Website and learn about the documentary film:

Exercise Revolution: The New Science of Exercise & The Brain, by John Ratey
Check out the blog: http://johnratey.typepad.com/blog/2009/04/index.html
In Spark, John J. Ratey, MD, takes the listener on a fascinating journey through the mind-body
connection, presenting startling new research to prove that exercise is truly the best defense against
everything from mood disorders to ADHD to addiction to menopause to Alzheimer's. He explains that the brain works
just as muscles do-growing with use, withering with inactivity-and shows why getting your heart and lungs
pumping can mean the difference between a calm, focused mind and a harried, inattentive self.

The Secret Lives of Boys by Malina Saval: Book Cover The Secret Lives Of Boys, by Malina Saval
"My goal, as I set out to write this book, was to find a well-balanced cross-section of teenage boys from all walks
of life — rich, poor, white, black, Jewish, Christian, Muslim, agnostic — so that each parent opening this book
could find his or her son on one of its pages. In the end, each boy's personality, and not his race, religion, or
socioeconomic condition, was what prevailed during my interviews as the most crucial and telling characteristic."
